How customs clearance works with us
Red Bridge Freight does not lodge declarations itself. We coordinate your clearance with partner customs brokers who submit the declarations to HMRC on CDS. We gather the documents from you, pass them to the broker, and keep you informed until the goods are released.
What can be arranged
- Import declarations for goods arriving in the UK
- Export declarations for goods leaving the UK
- Transit movements, where goods travel under customs control
- Guidance on duty and import VAT, including postponed VAT accounting where you are eligible
- Help checking commodity codes and the information needed for a declaration
Documents usually needed
| Document | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| EORI number (GB, or XI for Northern Ireland) | Identifies the importer or exporter to HMRC. Without it a declaration cannot be made. |
| Commercial invoice | Shows the seller, buyer, goods, values and Incoterms. |
| Packing list | Lists packages, weights and contents. |
| Transport document | Air waybill, bill of lading or road consignment note (CMR). |
| Commodity codes | Decide the duty rate and any controls on the goods. |
| Proof of origin (where claimed) | Needed to claim preferential duty rates under a trade agreement. |
| Licences or certificates (if applicable) | For example for food, plants, animal products, chemicals or controlled goods. |
| Direct representation authority | Lets the broker make the declaration on your behalf. |
Duty and VAT
Import duty and VAT are owed by the importer. How they are paid, for example through your own HMRC arrangements or by prior payment, is agreed before the goods arrive. We will explain the options when we quote.
Accurate declarations only
Every declaration must describe the goods, their value and their origin truthfully. We will not arrange declarations that undervalue, misdescribe or misclassify goods, and we may decline shipments where the information provided does not add up.
