Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how we work, quotes and customs.

Do you own your own trucks, planes or ships?

No. Red Bridge Freight is a forwarding agent. We arrange and coordinate transport with independent partner carriers and hauliers, and customs work with partner customs brokers.

What information do you need to quote?

The collection and delivery locations, what the goods are and their value, the number of packages with weights and dimensions, when the goods are ready, and the Incoterms if you have agreed them. Our quote form asks for all of this.

How do I choose between air, sea and road?

Air is usually fastest but costs more per kilo. Sea is usually the most economical for larger volumes but takes longer. Road often suits the UK and Europe. Tell us your deadline and budget and we will suggest options.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL (full container load) means you have a container to yourself. LCL (less than container load) means your goods share a container and you pay for the space used. See our sea freight page for more.

Do I need an EORI number?

Yes, if you import goods into or export goods out of the UK, you normally need an EORI number starting with GB (or XI for Northern Ireland). You can apply for one on GOV.UK.

Who makes my customs declaration?

Declarations are prepared and submitted on CDS by our partner customs brokers. We collect the documents from you and coordinate the process.

Who pays the import duty and VAT?

Import duty and VAT are owed by the importer of record, unless the shipment is on DDP terms where the seller has agreed to pay. We will explain how payment will work before the goods arrive.

Can you ship dangerous goods?

Some dangerous goods can be shipped with the correct packing, labelling and paperwork. Please tell us at the quote stage so we can check with our partners.

Is my shipment insured?

Carriers' liability is limited by law and contract and is often less than the value of the goods. Cargo insurance can be considered separately. Ask us when you request a quote.

How do I contact you?

Use the quote and contact form, or email info@redbridgefreight.co.uk.

Have a shipment in mind?

Tell us what is moving, from where and to where. We will come back with options and a clear quote.
